Commissioning & Service Transformation: 
Through the Lens of ABCD

A course aimed at middle management and senior leadership teams in Local Authorities, National Health Service Organisations and larger VCFS and NGOs looking to commission ABCD at a strategic level and/or to transform their organisation to work in more community centered ways. 
Participants will gain a deep understanding of commissioning and service transformation through the lens of ABCD. The training will deal with real world situations that relate to your specific context. The course is delivered by Cormac Russell and Mick Ward. 

Outcomes include: 
  • A baseline of current reality 
  • Development of a localised Commissioning Framework
  • Development of Business Plan and Evaluation Framework 
  • Development of an operational framework

Prior to the course, Nurture Development will work with assigned leads from the participating organisation to establish organisational readiness and to ensure the course content directly supports organisational objectives.

Discuss
Five interactive facilitated video conference sessions that deepen understanding and practical application through discussion, peer mentoring and skilled facilitation.
Reflect
Facilitated reflective practice that deepens understanding and embeds learning.  
Apply
Practical exercises and assignments that take the principles and theory and apply them to your organisational context.
Strategise
You will develop a business plan, evaluation framework and operational framework for ABCD in your organisation by the end of the course.

Meet the instructors

Cormac Russell

Cormac is Managing Director of Nurture Development and a faculty member of the Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) Institute at De Paul University, Chicago.
Over the last 20 years Cormac has worked in over 30 countries around the world. He has trained communities, agencies, NGOs and governments in ABCD and other strengths based approaches in Kenya, Rwanda, Southern Sudan, South Africa, the UK, Ireland, Sweden, the Netherlands, Canada and Australia.

Mick Ward

Mick Ward joined Nurture Development as Senior Associate after retiring in June 2020 as Chief Officer, Transformation and Innovation, Adults and Health, in Leeds City Council. He led on LCC’s ground breaking work on proliferating ABCD at a strategic level within a Local Authority as well as leading work on Creative Arts and Health & Wellbeing, Service Transformation, Digital HWB and Equality.

He is from Leeds and worked for social care for 42 years. Starting as a Care Assistant his career developed into becoming Deputy Director of Adults and Heath, a joint appointment between Leeds City Council and Leeds Clinical Commissioning Group, leading on to commissioning across a wide range of health and care services.
Mick has a strong commitment to the social model of disability, citizenship, communities, innovation, culture, equality, and partnership working.
